HYDRO ENERGY

Hydropower is an integral part of the generation of electricity within the UK. Large scale schemes are predominantly found in Scotland and Wales (due to geographical factors). Hydropower is not a new technology and therefore has been widely deployed in the UK.

New technological developments over tidal and wave power generation have been adopted in a number of schemes that are currently in public consultation. There are a number of large scale schemes currently under consideration, such as the Severn barrage, which will be capable of generating around 10% of the UK’s electricity. Much of the UK’s electricity demands could in principal be met using this technology, however, there is often a significant ecological and environmental cost that goes hand in hand with these schemes that needs to be considered when assessing the viability of Hydropower schemes.

Whilst large scale schemes have usually been evaluated to some extent, there is often scope to apply the technology at the micro level using existing local resources. PROjEN will review any schemes to include the review of alternative energy generation dependant on your local environment.
